As there is a rush to travel to Pilgrim place Prayagraj to attend Mahakumb. Most of the railway station, bus stands are crowded. People from different cities travelling to Prayagraj leading to Stampede.
Last Saturday on 15th feb 2025 a stampede occurred at New Delhi Railway Station, resulting in the loss of 18 lives. This incident happened in New Delhi around 10pm on Saturday when many people were traveling to Prayagraj to attend Mahakumb as a result it became overcrowded leading to stampede where 18 lives were lost including 2 children.
an Indian Air Force (IAF) sergeant who said later that there was an announcement during that time that did not come in the crowd. Avoid pushing each other , still people were not listening and at the end it was not manageable.
Some Eyewitness Says:
Another Eyewitness said that “The crowd was overwhelming, with people packed onto the foot overbridge. Such a massive turnout was unexpected. Even during festivals, I’ve never witnessed such a huge gathering at the railway station. While the administration and NDRF personnel were present, controlling the situation became impossible once the crowd exceeded its limit”
A grieving brother at LNJP Hospital, who lost his sister in the stampede, recounted, “We were a group of 12 heading to Maha Kumbh. We hadn’t even reached the platform and were still on the stairs when the crowd overwhelmed us. My family, including my sister, got trapped in the chaos. It took us half an hour to find her, but by then, she had already passed away.”
Another Eyewitness said that “There was no crowd control in place… An announcement was made that the train scheduled for platform number 12 would instead arrive on platform number 16. As a result, people rushed from both directions, leading to a stampede. Some individuals were injured and taken to the hospital…”
Pappu, a resident of Bihar’s Patna, shared his grief, saying, “My mother died in the stampede. We were on our way home.”
DCP Railway KPS Malhotra said “ As this happened in a fraction of second and people were uncontrollable. Write now the situation under control. Other people who were stuck are rescued and treatment is going on.
“A two-member high-level committee has been formed to investigate the matter… The situation is under control, and the passengers have been sent by special train… Train movement at the railway station is normal now,” Dilip Kumar, Executive Director of Information & Publicity (ED/IP), Railway Board.
Mr Kumar mentioned that toad as people travelling have increased, we have increased 4 more trains to Prayagraj for the convenience. But still people were more than expected and the crowd was uncontrollable.
