The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will choose Delhi’s next chief minister on February 19 in a meeting with its elected MLAs. The swearing-in ceremony will take place at Ramlila Maidan on February 20 at 10 AM. In the recent Delhi elections, the BJP secured 48 out of 70 seats, defeating the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). This marks the party’s return to power in Delhi after nearly 30 years. However, the BJP has not yet revealed who will take on the role of chief minister.

Possible contenders for Delhi’s next chief minister:

Vijender Gupta:

Vijender Gupta has served as a councilor from Rohini three times and was also the state president of Delhi BJP. In the 2025 elections, he won his third consecutive term from the Rohini constituency, defeating AAP’s Pradeep Mittal by 37,816 votes.

Parvesh Sahib:

Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma became a key figure in the election after defeating Arvind Kejriwal in the New Delhi constituency. He is the son of former Delhi Chief Minister Sahib Singh Verma. Verma started his political journey with the BJP and was elected to the Delhi Assembly in 2013. He later won the West Delhi Lok Sabha seat in both 2014 and 2019. In 2025, he returned to state politics and won against AAP leader Kejriwal by 4,089 votes.

Satish Upadhyay:

Satish Upadhyay is a senior leader of the BJP and has played a key role in the party’s growth in Delhi. He also served as the Delhi BJP president. In the 2025 elections, he won from Malviya Nagar by defeating AAP MLA Somnath Bharti. This victory was significant for the BJP as Malviya Nagar was previously an AAP stronghold.

Harish Khurana:

Harish Khurana, the son of former Delhi Chief Minister Madan Lal Khurana, contested his first election in 2025 from the Moti Nagar constituency. He faced AAP’s Shivcharan Goel in the race. With his political experience in BJP’s Delhi unit, he made a strong impression in the elections.

Virendra Sachdeva became the Delhi BJP president in March 2023. Under his leadership, the party won the 2025 elections with a majority. After the victory, he said the central leadership would decide the next chief minister. Apart from politics, he is active in sports and holds key positions in the Archery Association of India and the Delhi Olympics.

Other important contenders for the position include Pawan Sharma, Ashish Sood, Rekha Gupta, Shikha Rai, Ravinder Indraj Singh, and Kailash Gangwal.
